Governance at Richard Huish College

The Richard Huish College Corporation, the governing body or ‘board’, is responsible for determining the educational character and mission of the College and for strategic and financial planning.

The Corporation has decided that its membership should currently stand at the maximum permitted number of up to twenty members. The membership must have the wide range of skills, expertise and experience necessary for ensuring that the Corporation meets all its statutory obligations and works within the legal framework set out in the Instruments and Articles of Government for Sixth Form Colleges (January 2008). The key statutory duties of the Corporation are:

  • the determination and periodic review of the educational character and mission of the institution and the oversight of its activities
  • approving the quality strategy of the institution
  • ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources, the solvency of the institution and the Corporation, and safeguarding their assets
  • approving annual estimates of income and expenditure
  • the appointment, grading, suspension, dismissal and determination of the pay and conditions of service of the holders of senior posts and the Clerk to the Corporation
  • Setting a framework for the pay and conditions of all other staff.

The membership of the Corporation includes parent and student governors, with the board placing great value on the ‘learner voice’ in its transaction of College business.

As well as conducting its business in accordance with the Instruments and Articles of Government, there are a number of other important policies which set out the way in which the Corporation must operate. These policies include the Code on Standards of Conduct and the Code on Access to Information. These and other policies can be found by clicking the relevant links in this governance section of the website. Policies are reviewed and approved by the governors on a regular basis.

Governors meet a number of times during each academic term and take a keen interest in the work of the College, both through the formal learning environment and through the many other activities which make up the College experience. There is an annual calendar of meetings which is occasionally subject to amendment.

If you would like to know more about the work of the governors, or if you have any requests for specific information on Corporation/governance matters, you should contact the Clerk to the Corporation, Jane Scott, at the College. The Clerk can be contacted via email janes@richuish.ac.uk or via telephone during normal office hours.
