Young Enterprise at Richard Huish College is Buzzing…

for-web-bee-display-tableRichard Huish College in Taunton has a long tradition of success in encouraging young enterprise and for the seventh year running a group of their students have won through to the County Finals of the Young Enterprise Innovation Awards.

At Wells Trade Fair on February 9th Buzz-Word, this year’s young enterprise company, wowed the judges with their ideas to write children’s books about Bees.  Characters such as Bee Friendly and Bee Happy help to promote a more positive image of bees to young children.  They are now working hard towards the County Final on May 18th.

To promote their books, Buzz-word have organised a FLOWER POWER DAY at Hestercombe Gardens on Saturday March 27th between 1pm and 4pm.  People are encouraged to come along and scatter Wildflower Seeds on a designated area within the gardens.  They can also enjoy an afternoon of informed entertainment, stalls and games centred on Bees.

If you would like to buy a copy of the latest book it is on sale from the Richard Huish Box Office on 01823 320810, priced at £2.50.

College students get behind-the-scenes’ access to Business Opportunities

Huish students at BPP Business SchoolEighteen Students aged from Richard Huish College descended on London on Monday, 30 November and got the chance to boost their employability skilling by gaining exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ access to one of Britain’s most influential organisations.

BPP Business College opened their doors to the group of Huish students. In the morning they were introduced to a different aspect of Higher education through a College tour. They also took part in a realistic work activity, getting the unique opportunity to experience the teaching environment in a commercial business university.

The inspiring visit was part of a day-long event, ‘A Capital Experience’, organised by aspiration-raising business-education programme Career Academies UK, involving a total of 1,200 students from across the UK and over 50 top London-based employers.

Then in the afternoon, the students gathered at the National Theatre to participate in a range of business-related activities, led by motivational speaker Dave McQueen. During the inspirational session, serial entrepreneur Shaa Wasmund and Accenture Partner Tim Robinson also shared their own career journeys with the teenagers. Status – the current UK Street Dance Champions for 2009 – made a welcome guest appearance.

Lesley Jarrett, Career Academy Co-Ordinator commented, “Our students really appreciated getting the chance to find out what it is like to study and work in the Capital and also share their experiences with other Career Academy students. We hope that ‘A Capital Experience’ will unleash an ambitious, excited generation of future employees.”

Student comments included:

“It was a really good experience that I will remember for a long time”

“ Great experience, good fun and I’m getting more motivated”

Martyn Drain, Acting Chief Executive of Career Academies UK, said:  “At a time when youth unemployment is at worryingly high levels and young people are leaving school without the skills they need to succeed, ‘A Capital Experience’ is more relevant than ever. The day is designed to provide these teenagers with inspiring, work-related learning experiences and open their eyes to what is available if they aim high. Our hope is that that after visiting the opportunities that are available to them to develop their business skills, they will realise that a successful future career is not just a dream and is fact well within their grasp.”

‘A Capital Experience’ is the biggest national one-day event in the Career Academy calendar and kicks off the two-year programme for young people taking part. Richard Huish has been running the programme since September.

The Career Academy programme was set up in 2002 by Sir Win Bischoff, current Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group plc and provides a qualification equivalent to three ‘A’ levels, involving one-to-one business mentoring and a six-week paid internship.

Nationally, 95% of Career Academy graduates go on to higher education, or an equivalent level of work-related training, compared with a predicted 40% based on their GCSE performance at the start of the programme.

Huish Students excel in Cambridge Union Debating Competition

16 teams from all over the West Country gatHuish Debating winnershered at Richard Huish College on the 9th November for the first round of the Cambridge Union debating competition.  Huish teams were victorious in their rounds and will go on to the next round.   The winning teams included Alec Macgregor and Rob Thompson, and Luke Parchment and Matt Dowds.   The other two Huish teams (both runners-up in their rooms) were Jaxom Champion and Mary Bateman, and Katharine Cook and Mike Knight. (Katharine and Mike were actually runners-up to Luke and Matt!)

Debating in all the rooms was robust and lively as sixth form students engaged fully with major questions of our age.  They all discussed “This House would ban the consumption of meat” and second motions varied but included “This House would make students bear the full cost of their university education” and “This House would raise the driving age to 21 for males only”.

Karen Revans, the Huish Debating Coach said “I am delighted that our students did so well and we now look forward to the next round.  Debating will help them to develop the skills required to take them to leadership positions in the professions and politics.”

The next round will take place in February.
